By the year 2015, there will be a staggering 6.5 Billion people on earth (UN Census, 2004). And joining those 6,500,000,000 people will be 2 Billion personal computers (Forrester Research, 2008). Between the 6.5 Billion people alive, and the 2 Billion PC’s, we have something that pundits like to call the “Digital Divide”.
To the billions of people without access to a PC, choices are limited. Often times children avoid school or focus less time on studies and more time on helping the family. In India, the quality of Public Education is particularly low. This stems from several reasons, the first being a simple lack of resources, the second being from overcrowding of classrooms, and the third being from lack of teacher training. Children in India are not given the same chances that Children in other parts of the world are given. It is this reason why a cheap learning platform is required for these people, which is where the $10 Computer steps in.
In India alone we estimate that approximately 500,000 of these $10 computers are sold each year. That is 500,000 families that are given a basic computer, and 500,000 chances of meaning the difference between $1 a day and $1 an hour.
